We Are Family movie review

Posted on 03 September 2010 by Girish

Somebody said that mind is needed to copy some thing or its a type of talent. We Are Family , Dharma Productions’ official remake of Hollywood hit Stepmom , makes it look as if it can’t be done.

Maya (Kajol) is raising three children on her own, because husband Aman (Rampal) is now an ex. He’s the kind of ex any divorced woman would be happy to have, though: instead of getting lost in new flame Shreya’s (Kareena) arms, as he properly should, he’s always going on about his beloved children .

Of course, Maya is the perfect stay-at-home mom, and of course Shreya is the complete career woman, so there is Conflict. Not just their mother, who has the decency to look cheesed off at the new woman in her husband’s life, the children hate her, too.

“I don’t want to be your mom, but we can be friends, no?” says Shreya, whisking away her frillies strewn in the father’s bedroom. The children proceed to behave badly. If I were Shreya, I’d threaten to thwack them, too. Sadly, she seems to have no child-rearing skills at all. Can’t be that hard to keep them fed and watered as they seem to subsist on bread and pizza (the spaghetti is used solely to be flung at each other), but she flubs that too, as Maya grows increasingly wan and pale, and poor Aman shuttles between both.

This is a film geared to flood our emotional valves : how can anyone remain unmoved at the impending, untimely death of a mother, who lives only for her children? Maya’s discovery that she has very little time left should have shaken us to our core: Kajol gets in there somewhat, but not all the way. No one, not the immaculately put together Kareena, nor the slimly sketched Arjun Rampal, gets to do that.
It’s all so contrived that you despair of this film having a single genuine emotion. The little girl’s constantly cutesy, the older girl is just getting her teenage spurs and keeps throwing tantrums, the boy is the only one who feels a tad real.

Those who’ve seen the original can mouth the dialogue as they go along: the lines are in Hindi, but it sounds as if this whole bunch is talking in English. Susan Sarandon-Julia Roberts-Ed Harris made Stepmom good in a super schmaltzy, three-hanky kind of way: We Are Family doesn’t even get the cheese right, even when it manages to wring a few tears. “ Har aurat mein ek maa chhupi hoti hai ” (all-knowing Kajol to running-scared Kareena, in one of their heart-to-heart scenes) is gag-inducing : did we really hear that?

‘Munni Badnaam Hui Ddarling Tere Liye’, by this song from Salman starer movie Dabangg is in controversy which is going to be release on 10th Sept 2010.

An activist has filed a petition in the city civil court seeking deletion of the word ‘Hindustan’ from a song in forthcoming movie Dabangg. Rajkumar Tak, in his petition, has alleged that the song has used nation’s name hurting the patriotic sentiments of every Indian.

Through his advocate Sushan Kunjuram, Tak has said that he was shocked to hear the promos of the song Munni badnaam hui… “The vulgar item song shows girl called Munni indecently dancing… and one corrupt police officer who in his uniform sings Leh Hindustan hui darling tere liye,” Tak’s petition says.

The petition adds that the producers, director and lyricist have jointly committed “mockery” of our nation, which is “highly objectionable” and “unpardonable”.

Tak’s petition also said the Censor board has neglected and failed to discharge their duties by not noticing the “defaming” lyrics. The case is likely to be heard on August 30.
